Sort your WordPress Media Library by actual filenames.

Media Name Sort is a lightweight WordPress plugin that adds filename-based sorting to the Media Library list view.

WordPress normally manages media using attachment data such as titles and upload dates. Media Name Sort lets you sort your media using the actual uploaded filename instead.

This is especially useful when your filenames contain sequential numbers or when the filename itself is important for managing your media.

Natural and alphabetical sorting

Media Name Sort provides four sorting options:

Natural: Asc
Natural: Desc
Alpha: Asc
Alpha: Desc

Natural sorting handles numbers within filenames in a human-friendly order.

For example:

1.jpg
2.jpg
3.jpg
10.jpg
20.jpg
100.jpg

instead of:

1.jpg
10.jpg
100.jpg
2.jpg
20.jpg
3.jpg

It also works with filenames such as:

image1.jpg
image2.jpg
image10.jpg
image20.jpg

Alpha sorting provides standard string-based filename ordering when that is what you need.

Sort by the actual filename

Media Name Sort uses the physical filename of the uploaded file rather than the WordPress attachment title.

For example, even if an attachment has a different title in WordPress, sorting is still based on its actual filename.

Upload directory paths are ignored. A file stored as:

2026/09/image10.jpg

is sorted simply as:

image10.jpg

Simple by design

There is no settings screen and nothing to configure.

After activating the plugin:

  1. Open Media > Library.
  2. Switch to the list view.
  3. Select a sorting method from the Filename dropdown.
  4. Click Filter.

That’s it.

The plugin does not rename files, modify attachment titles, or change media metadata. It only changes the order in which media items are displayed.

Designed for the Media Library list view

Media Name Sort works specifically with the WordPress Media Library list view.

The grid view is left untouched and continues to use the standard WordPress behavior.

Keeping the plugin focused on the list view makes its purpose simple: when you need to inspect and manage media according to filenames, you can put them in a predictable order.
